I have been involved with the raising and training of various dog breeds for most of my life. My first encounter with a Boykin Spaniel was in September 1989 while shrimping in the Cooper River. There was a hunter in a small boat, shooting doves flying into a spoil area from the mainland. He had a small chocolate dog with a wavy coat that enthusiastically jumped in the river to retrieve doves. I putted over and introduced myself to the hunter, Kevin Cox. Kevin proceeded to tell me about his dog, Buddy and the Boykin Spaniel breed. Buddy was so friendly and fun to be around that I fell in love with him immediately. Approximately two years later I purchased my first Boykin Spaniel and have been in love with the breed ever since. Over the years, we have found them to be a truly remarkable breed that blends well with both home and the field. The Boykin Spaniel was enacted as the SC State Dog in 1985.
